Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can dodge effectively at the right time to avoid defenders in games.
Key learning points
- Move: dodging effectively using the correct technique is important when trying to stay away from defenders.
- Think: dodging successfully to avoid members of the other team is important to be able to keep possession.
- Feel: self-belief enables us to strive to be able to dodge effectively and avoid the defenders.
- Connect: playing fairly and consistently in a game demonstrates an understanding of the importance of fairness.
Keywords
Dodging - to avoid something by moving quickly aside or changing direction
Defenders - individuals who are trying to stop the attackers from scoring by tagging them
Avoid - staying away and trying not to go near something
Common misconception
Pupils might think they need to perform a dodge as soon as they see a defender.
Performing a dodge too early gives the defender time to react and move with you (shadow you). Performing a dodge too late means you don't have space to use the best technique for your dodge. The right timing will help you avoid the defender.
Teacher tip
Learning the right time to perform a dodge takes lots of practice and experience. Praising pupils for great timing during a game will help them to develop a sense of timing. Watching others and saying "Now" as they make their dodge can also help.
