Dodging when attacking and defending
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can dodge effectively when attacking and defending in a game.
Key learning points
- Move: dodging effectively to catch an attacker requires us to react quickly and change direction.
- Move: when attacking, it is important to react and move quickly into space to create an opportunity to dodge a defender.
- Think: concentration is important when attacking and defending so we can react and dodge quickly in the game.
- Feel: challenging ourselves to score points by continually dodging around your opponent shows self-belief.
- Connect: playing by the rules and rotating roles throughout the lesson demonstrates an understanding of fairness.
Keywords
Attackers - the team who is trying score as many points as possible
Defenders - the team responsible for preventing the opposition (attackers) from scoring
React - how you respond or what you do when something happens
Common misconception
Pupils might think that after one attacking or defending move, their job in the team is finished and they stand still and stop following the play.
Often in a game, you will need to do some attacking work and some defending work. Concentrating and reacting to the actions of others will help you to decide if you need to attack or defend.
Teacher tip
Playing games where pupils are required to switch between attacking and defending roles increases the challenge because they are required to concentrate on the action all the time. Praise and acknowledge pupils who concentrate and stay focused for the full duration of the activity time.
