Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: moving quickly and appropriately to the information I have heard will help my team to be successful.
  2. Think: trying different strategies that others suggest can help us to solve problems together.
  3. Feel: listening to others and adding our own suggestions shows self-belief and courage.
  4. Connect: listening to the suggestions of others demonstrates respect for their ideas and opinions.
  5. Connect: listening carefully is important to ensure information is communicated accurately and effectively.

Keywords

  • Listen - to pay close attention to words and sounds

  • Suggest - offer an idea or a plan that can be tried out

  • Respect - to treat others with kindness and care, showing that you value them and their ideas

Common misconception

Some pupils may think that staying silent while someone speaks is all that is needed to show respectful listening.

Staying silent can be described as passive listening. Active and respectful listening uses thinking skills to understand, remember and respond to what has been said. You need to plan your next actions based on the information that has been said.

When pupils design their own games, a reminder of general safety rules is recommended, e.g. equipment is not used to hit anyone, tagging must be used instead of tackling etc. The most successful games often have simple rules and use simple skills that everyone can have a go at.
