Key learning points
- Move: making and holding a shape requires body tension, control and coordination.
- Think: ongoing reflection while concentrating on a problem ensures it will be solved.
- Feel: trying a range of different ideas shows self-belief and enables us to solve problems.
- Connect: cooperating with and listening to others is fair and it promotes trust in a partner.
Keywords
Challenge - trying something new, even if it seems hard
Communicate - sharing ideas through talk and actions
Concentrate - focusing attention and ignoring distractions
Common misconception
Pupils can only stand when making letter shapes.
Pupils can lie, sit, or stand to make letter shapes.
Teacher tip
It's ok for pupils to work in 3's, rather than leaving out a friend. This ensures that PE is a positive experience for all. Pupils will need some prior knowledge of capital letters before this lesson. Displaying keywords and phonics patterns is a nice cross curricular link for this lesson.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
