Jumping competition
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can take part in a jumping competition and understand how to perform long and triple jump with the correct technique.
Key learning points
- Move: to perform a standing long jump effectively, we bend our knees, drive our legs and swing our arms up.
- Move: in standing triple jump, we perform a hop, step, jump in sequence, linking them together smoothly.
- Think: when we jump with the correct technique, we are able to jump further and with more control.
- Feel: striving to demonstrate resilience by remaining positive in the competition is really important for success.
- Connect: being a role model to our partners shows we understand the importance of respect.
Keywords
Triple jump - a track and field event where an athlete performs a sequence of three jumps to cover as much distance as possible.
Long jump - a track and field event in which an athlete sprints down a runway and leaps as far as possible into a sandpit from a takeoff board.
Land - the final phase where the athlete touches down.
Common misconception
In the triple jump, pupils collapse the middle 'step phase' rather than getting equal height and distance from every phase.
Ensure pupils understand the importance of all phases of the jump, especially the step phase and that they understand all phases of the triple jump should contribute to an equal proportion of distance.
Teacher tip
Highlighting both the male and female record holders and jumping achievements is important for motivating all pupils. It gives them role models that they can relate to. Highlight the risk if tripping during 'hoop race' to ensure pupils take extra care when jumping.
