Formations, contrast and question and answer: performing

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can combine formations, contrast and question and answer in a choreography.

Key learning points

  1. Move: performing a dance using a specific formation requires precision and control.
  2. Think: selecting a formation by considering the pattern and spacing between the performers requires decision making.
  3. Feel: rehearsing a group dance requires self-discipline from everyone involved.
  4. Connect: we can provide effective feedback by interpreting what the choreographer is communicating.

Keywords

  • Formations - the patterns performers are arranged in

  • Contrast - distinctly different

  • Question and answer - a choreographic relationship based on taking turns

Common misconception

Contrast has to be opposites.

Opposites are an excellent example of a contrast since they are completely different. However, there are others, e.g. to contrast 'up' you could use 'forwards' since it is a distinctly different direction.

Teacher tip

Formations can become more clear to pupils once they appreciate this is from a 'bird's eye view'. Using everyday objects such as the dots on a dice or a domino can help to make the arrangements clear.

Equipment

Suggested music.
