Location and level: paragraphs

Lesson details

Learning outcome

I can use a precise location as a place to start my dance.

Key learning points

  1. Move: consistently returning to an exact location requires precision.
  2. Think: selecting the shapes or actions we perform requires decision-making.
  3. Think: changing the levels of our actions and shapes requires creative thinking.
  4. Feel: self-discipline is needed to maintain stillness whilst my partner is performing.
  5. Connect: using a precise location helps to communicate the idea of paragraphs.

Keywords

  • Location - where a shape or action is placed, e.g. a starting position

  • Level - the height of a shape or action; high, medium or low

  • Alternate - take turns, the basis of the choreographic relationship of question and answer

Common misconception

A starting position only describes the shape you make.

A starting position involves both the shape you make, as well as the location. It refers to both what you do and where you do it.

Teacher tip

Defining the area each duet should work within can avoid unnecessary risk of collisions. Existing floor markings can be very useful. Alternatively, resources such as cones can be used.

Equipment

Suggested music, floor markers.
