Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: performing rhythm patterns demonstrates musicality.
  2. Think: finding different ways to perform an action involves problem solving.
  3. Feel: repeating a pattern accurately requires resilience.
  4. Connect: working in unison with a partner requires cooperation.

Keywords

  • Rhythm - a repeated pattern of movement or sound

  • Repeat - to perform again

  • Stamp - heavily landing a body part (usually a foot) on the ground

Common misconception

Stamping is something we do when we are frustrated; it's not a dance action.

All actions can be used in dance. Stamping could be used to communicate frustration or could be used to add emphasis, make rhythmic sounds or show strength.

To establish a repeating rhythm pattern, initially use the action words rather than counts to aid memory, e.g. 'stamp-stamp-stamp-jump'. Once established, this can gradually change to claps or counts, e.g. clap-clap-clap-jump or 1,2,3, jump so the pupils become familiar with counting the music.
