Utilising apparatus to create moments of flight

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can create a sequence that includes three jumps using a variety of apparatus while jumping from different heights, with control and extension.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: quality jumps require bending the knees, swinging the arms with control and extension when using apparatus.
      2. Move: creating a sequence of jumps on or off apparatus requires constantly applying flow.
      3. Think: creating a range of quality jumping ideas to link with flow on a variety of apparatus requires evaluation.
      4. Feel: the determination to try multiple different locations on the apparatus to jump from shows great integrity.
      5. Connect: creating a sequence of jumps in pairs requires collaboration and trust in each other's ideas.

      Keywords

      • Jump - pushing off the ground or equipment with our legs to go up into the air

      • Height - how high off the ground something is

      • Apparatus - equipment made for a particular task

      Common misconception

Pupils may rush the jump and not be balanced before they take off from the apparatus. Pupils may misplace their feet on the apparatus. Pupils may land with stiff knees or poor body position.

Always check balance and engage the core before jumping. Ensure a solid stance before jumping. Pupils should bend their knees to absorb impact on landing and make sure their weight is centered over their feet.

      Teacher tip

Always use padded landing areas when jumping from height to help avoid injury. Pupils should gradually work from lower to higher heights to build confidence. Pupils should focus on control when jumping from apparatus.
