Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: throwing the ball accurately requires throwing from a low to high position and vaying the power behind our throw.
  2. Move: when our partner throws the ball, we need to be ready to catch with our hands up and our feet behind the ball.
  3. Think: concentrating enables us to throw accurately and hit the targets or space.
  4. Feel: continuing to try and throw accurately towards targets, even when we sometimes miss, demonstrates good resilience.
  5. Connect: cooperating and trusting our partners when keeping scores shows respect for one another.

Keywords

  • Court - playing area where a game or sport is played

  • Accuracy - the ability to control where we hit an object

  • Power - using your muscles more quickly and forcefully

Common misconception

When throwing underarm, pupils often struggle to release the ball so it travels forward towards the target. Pupils may forget to have their hands up ready to catch the the ball.

Encourage pupils to develop a smooth arm swing when throwing towards a target and finish with a straight arm pointing in the direction of their target. Remind pupils to adopt the ready position with hands up in front of them when waiting to catch.

Ensure that pupils experience lots of success in this lesson by making sure the targets they are aiming for are challenging, but not impossible, for them to hit. Some pupils may need to be closer to the net to throw the ball and reach the targets.
