Striking and fielding games
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can understand and explain the concept of batting and fielding in games.
Key learning points
- Move: when we are batting, we must throw or hit the ball into space away from fielders to help our team score points.
- Move: when we are fielding, we should run as fast as possible to retrieve the ball and throw accurately to the marker.
- Think: knowing why the batters are trying to score points and the fielders are trying to stop them, helps our tactics.
- Feel: always trying our hardest when batting and fielding, even when we make mistakes, shows we have integrity.
- Connect: congratulating our team members and opponents shows respect.
Keywords
Batting - when a player uses a bat to hit a thrown or bowled ball, aiming to score points by hitting it far
Fielding - when players on the non-batting team try to catch or stop the ball and get the batters out
Score - winning points in a game situation
Common misconception
Pupils may find when they move to throw/strike the ball, it goes somewhere different to where they had intended.
Encourage the striker/thrower to turn their body, as well as their head and shoulders towards the space they would like the ball to go.
Teacher tip
Use cones/markers as visual targets so pupils can see the spaces they can aim for. Ensure there is enough space for the activites so fielders are safe to run quickly to retrieve the ball and batters can run between cones without any interference.
Equipment
30+ cones; 6 hoops; a range of items to throw/hit; balls, beanbags.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
