Who I am: my name and character

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can create a motif involving a range of actions and use a variety of methods to develop it.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: being able to perform a range of actions in different ways improves competency.
      2. Think: making choices involves reflecting on the options.
      3. Feel: identifying the character traits in others requires integrity.
      4. Connect: ensuring everyone contributes their ideas demonstrates respect.

      Keywords

      • Motif - a pattern of actions, seen more than once in a dance, that can be varied or developed

      • Development - changes applied to a motif

      • Question and answer - a choreographic relationship where the dancers perform different actions in an alternating pattern (one at a time)

      Common misconception

      Pupils should 'count' the music.

Whilst some pupils can count music accurately, it can be an additional level of challenge for others and divert them from the task in hand. Most pupils will naturally 'feel' the music and be able to respond to the tempo and rhythm appropriately.

      Teacher tip

Positioning yourself near a corner of the room whilst the pupils are exploring or rehearsing their work offers you the best viewpoint to see all the pupils.
