Movement, space, passing and receiving
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can send and receive the ball whilst applying the footwork rule.
Key learning points
- Move: throwing and catching with control requires balance to securely ground a landing foot.
- Think: the landing foot is used to pivot around and to direct the body to open up space.
- Think: the tarsals and metatarsals are located in the foot.
- Feel: asking for the ball in space and in good time requires confidence.
- Connect: sending and receiving the ball requires awareness of where the feeder is.
Keywords
Footwork rule - after catching the ball, you may not reground the landing foot until you release the ball again. Your landing foot can remain grounded and become the pivot foot
Chest pass - a pass from the torso, typically using two-hands
Shoulder pass - a one handed pass relesaed from the shoulder
Common misconception
Pupils think the chest pass is only used for shorter distances.
The chest pass is a very versatile technique that can be used for short and longer distances. It works well as a technique to pass when aiming for the space a teammate is moving into.
Teacher tip
The V practice provides opportunity for jumping, landing and the pivot. You may want to consider moving straight to 'turning in the air', to catch the ball and land facing the direction for the next pass.
