Outwitting opponents and ball handling under pressure

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can get free to attack and maintain possession under pressure.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: a change of direction can be used to get into space to receive a ball.
      2. Think: it is important to respond quickly to where there is open space on court.
      3. Think: the patella is also referred to as the kneecap.
      4. Feel: moving into space persistently when being marked requires determination.
      5. Connect: signalling, good contact and a positive body movement should be used before receiving the ball.

      Keywords

      • Feint - to go one way by moving the feet and the body, then set off in another direction and into space

      • Obstruction - a rule stating you must be 1 metre away from the ball holder when defending

      • Third - the netball court is divided into three sections, a goal third at each end and a centre third

      Common misconception

An attacker should move as as soon as their teammate catches the ball.

A feint is an effective way to create space as we wait for the ball handler to present the ball ready to make the pass, rather than moving too early and the defender being able to catch up with you.

      Teacher tip

This lesson is a useful one to repeat but with balls of different shapes and sizes balls, e.g., rugby and tennis ball. This will help to continue to develop the attacking movement regardless of the invasion game.
