Playing and officiating your own small sided games fairly

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

      I can officiate a small-sided game.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: keeping in line with the ball will ensure accurate reading of the game.
      2. Think: having an understanding of the basic rules of the game is essential o officiate.
      3. Feel: confident decision making will give others freedom to play safely and fairly.
      4. Connect: being fair and accurate when making decisions is important for building trust.

      Keywords

      • Centre pass - starts the game from the centre circle. The centre pass is then alternated between each team after a goal has been scored

      • Free pass - awarded to the opposing team for a minor incident. Usually an error the individual has made i.e. not involving anyone else

      • Penalty pass - a penalty involving another player that is taken where the infringement occurred and the offending player stands out of play

      Common misconception

Pupils think when they go offside or do footwork they have to stand out of play as this is a penalty pass.

Both of these infringements do not include another player so a free pass is awarded. If a player obstructs or contacts an oppositing player a penalty pass is then awarded.

      Teacher tip

To develop confidence describing a decision, pupils complete a back to back drawing activity after the warm up. One thinks of an object and attempts to describe it whilst sat back to back for the partner to draw. It works well as an ice breaker and provides practice to provide instructions clearly.
