Working cooperatively to learn to shoot with precision and understanding
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can replicate the correct shooting technique and analyse the technique of others.
Key learning points
- Move: a tall body position, with fully extended arms above the head, pushes the ball high onto a shooting arc.
- Think: rehearsing the stages of shooting, a stable base, extending the arms and a controlled release increases success.
- Think: the humerus, ulna and radius form the major bones of the arm.
- Feel: visualising a shot going through the net can help build self-belief.
- Connect: helping others to be successful requires careful observation and specific feedback.
Keywords
Goal circle - the D or semi-circle that marks out the shooting area at each end of the court
Goal shooter (GS) - only allowed in the attacking goal third of the court, one of two players in a game who is allowed to shoot
Goal attack (GA) - only allowed in the centre and attacking goal third, one of two players who is allowed to shoot
Common misconception
A GS is a static position.
The GS can move out of the goal circle to create space for the GA to drive in and receive the ball. A shooter position requires dynamic movements such as power to jump for a rebound.
Teacher tip
Provide enough time before half court netball to explain the starting positions and areas they are allowed (see additional materials). Ensure pupils get chance to play GA and GS.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom.
