Tournament time with performing and officiating roles in doubles pairings

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can play in a round robin tournament and officiate games effectively.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: playing to the back by hitting deep forehand and backhand shots, helps build winning opportunities.
      2. Think: when officiating, it is important to make loud, clear calls of the score or whether the shuttle lands in or out.
      3. Think: if your team's score is even then you serve from the right, if it is odd, you serve from the left.
      4. Feel: achieving a personal best performance isn't always about winning the match.
      5. Connect: ethics in sport are moral principles that guide us to play fairly with respect, integrity and good etiquette.

      Keywords

      • Round-robin - a tournament where every player plays every player in their league, as opposed to a knock-out or elimination event

      • Umpire - the official who keeps the score and enforces the rules

      • Line judge - decides if the shuttle has landed in (on the line) or not

      Common misconception

Pupils blame each other and lose focus rather than remaining positive and regrouping.

Remind pupils that the balanced teams mean everyone should have an equal chance of winning. Hence it is the pair who gel the best and work hard to win as many points as possible across all their matches that will win.

      Teacher tip

You will need to make sure every pair has an equal number of matches so this may need more than one lesson.
