Analysing performance and working more effectively as a team
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can observe and understand batting, bowling and fielding techniques, suggesting ways to improve and making them more effective.
Key learning points
- Move: fielders backup the post that teammates are most likely to throw the ball towards to prevent a misfield.
- Think: positive language is used to provide feedback to others due to the impact on their self-esteem and motivation.
- Thick: tactics are applied to work more effectively as a team when both batting and fielding.
- Feel: look for the positive in situations, dwelling on mistakes results in reduced self-esteem.
- Connect: compassion when working with each other is demonstrated by focusing on what's effective more than the mistakes.
Keywords
Tactics - the planned actions or strategies used by players or teams to gain an advantage and perform better in the game
Back up - having a teammate ready to support another player in case they miss or drop the ball
Analyse - examine something in detail in order to explain and or interpret it
Common misconception
Pupils often make slow decisions when covering each other due to lack of confidence. They also panic when they are under pressure in a game situation.
Encourage quick and clear communication using captains and coaches to help players make good decisions.
Teacher tip
Use modified games to work on particular weaknesses or strengths of your class. For example, focus on 3 ball rounders in small teams to work on batting or 20 ball rounders to work on tactical fielding or batting under pressure. Different versions of the game require different tactics and strategies.
Equipment
4-5 rounders balls (or alternative), bases, stumps or alternative for 2 pitches

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
