Prom night: Salsa
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can apply changes to the basic Salsa step pattern to add interest and complexity.
Key learning points
- Move: learning the basic steps of a dance style and how to vary them provides a solid foundation.
- Think: exploring how steps can be adapted to add interest involves decision making.
- Feel: combining actions and style features requires resilience.
- Connect: working closely with a partner involves clear communication and trust.
Keywords
Latin American - a family of dance styles from the Caribbean, South and Central America
Embellish - adding extra detail to make the action content more attractive
Parallel - the position of the feet when standing in a neutral position with the weight evenly distributed
Common misconception
Dance actions should always be performed as big as possible so they are clear and stand out to an audience.
Whilst this is often the case for performance dances, social dances are often much smaller and more relaxed in their execution since they are often performed in a limited amount of space and purely for pleasure, rather than an audience.
Teacher tip
When demonstrating actions, some pupils find it beneficial to mirror their teacher, whereas others prefer to copy them. It can be useful to perform an action facing the pupils, then repeat it facing the same way as them.
