Lesson details
Key learning points
- Move: use two hands when carrying the ball to avoid knock-ons.
- Move: both arms move across the body and reach out in the direction the ball is being passed.
- Think: it's essential to look where you are passing to ensure the receiver is ready, rather than focused on defenders.
- Feel: problem solving finds gaps in the field to exploit through a mix of running, passing and movement off the ball.
- Connect: good awareness is required to support the ball carrier.
Keywords
Pop pass - a short, quick pass to maintain momentum in attack
Spin pass - applying rotation to the ball to help it travel faster and further mostly used by backline players (spiral or torpedo pass)
Touches - when a defender uses one hand to lightly tag the ball carrier on any part of their body, clothing or the ball
Common misconception
Pupils may think it easier to hold the ball in 1 hand.
Holding the ball in 1 hand might feel easier at first but it reduces control, increases the risk of a knock-on and makes it harder to pass accurately in both directions.
