Passing, catching and moving with precision

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can pass and move with precision as well as understanding Newton’s Laws of motion in action.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: catching the ball securely requires using both hands.
      2. Think: defending a shot requires quick reactions, teamwork and predicting the rebound.
      3. Think: the ball accelerates at a rate proportional to the force applied by the muscles to throw it.
      4. Feel: consistently matching your actions with your words demonstrates integrity.
      5. Connect: leaders build trust by being reliable, honest and supportive.

      Keywords

      • No interference - physical contact, blocking or intercepting passes are not allowed.

      • Law of inertia - Newton's first law whereby a body remains at rest or in motion at a constant speed and direction unless acted upon by an outside force

      • Law of acceleration - Newton's second law of motion whereby an object (e.g. the ball) accelerates at a rate proportional to the force that applied it

      Common misconception

Pupils make simple ball handling mistakes due to rushing.

You lose possession if the ball is dropped, so whilst you need to make a pass within 3 seconds, it is essential not to make rushed decisions for passing and focus on catching the ball carefully with both hands before making your next move.

      Teacher tip

This lesson is a nice opportunity for cross curricular links to Newton's Laws of Motion and wider science principles.

      Equipment

1 tchoukball between 5, 1 rebound frame per 5 players, bibs, knee pads (if available)
