Lesson details

Key learning points

  1. Move: a combination of power and accuracy is achieved with a strong and precise throw.
  2. Think: a jump shot that lands in the forbidden zone is illegal.
  3. Think: the force exerted by the ball into the rebound net triggers an equal and opposite force back on the ball.
  4. Feel: throwing the ball at maximum speed against the rebound net is great for stress relief.
  5. Connect: team spirit is created by fostering an environment where team members share ideas and support one another.

Keywords

  • Forbidden zones - semi-circular ‘D’ areas around each rebound frame where players cannot step

  • Square shot - the player throws the ball directly at the rebound frame while positioned straight in front of it

  • Law of reaction - Newton's third law whereby every action has an equal and opposite reaction

Common misconception

Pupils always use the same type of shot.

Just throwing the ball harder at the rebound frame increases the risk of a fault from failing to hit the target but is also very predictable for the opposition. Therefore vary your angle, speed and deception applied when shooting.
