      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can communicate effectively with teammates and adjust strategies to suit the situation

      Key learning points

      1. Move: varying the angle of shots through overarm, sidearm and underarm throws requires proper technique.
      2. Think: understanding the 3 main player positions are shooter, defender and centre, improves tactical thinking.
      3. Think: knowledge of performance comes from how it feels/looks whereas results are about the outcome (e.g. a goal).
      4. Feel: a change of possession requires quick mental adjustment to capitalise on the opportunity.
      5. Connect: ensuring all team members have sufficient game time requires cooperation.

      Keywords

      • Switch - a special type of pass across the baseline by faking a shot then passing to a teammate on the other side of the 'D'.

      • Knowledge of performance - a qualitative judgement of how well it felt or looked (e.g. a clean catch of the ball)

      • Knowledge of results - a quantitative understanding of the outcome (e.g. a goal or point won)

      Common misconception

Pupils always use the same type of throw for passing and shooting (i.e. overarm with a focus on power and a direct route to the rebound frame).

It is easy to defend a square shot or an obvious attack angle at the rebound frame. To outwit the opposition, look to vary the type, angle and pace of shots as well as utilising fakes (e.g. a switch).

      Teacher tip

You may need to give time for groups to practice the switch pass and shoot unopposed, before building it back in for double points in a game scenario.

      Equipment

1 tchoukball between 5, 1 rebound frame per 5 players, bibs, cones, knee pads (if available), additional materials
