Game play and review of others' performance
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can observe softball techniques and suggest ways to improve performance.
Key learning points
- Move: tagging a runner with the ball while they are between bases gets them out.
- Think: assessing the risk and reward of running between bases before deciding to run can help you avoid getting out.
- Think: carefully consider the vocabulary used to feedback to others to improve performance.
- Feel: valuing the impact others can have on performance helps you to become more open to constructive feedback.
- Connect: working collaboratively as a team greatly increases the chance of success.
Keywords
Tagging - when a fielder touches a runner with the ball while the runner is off a base, in order to get them out
Feedback - information given to someone about their performance to help them understand what they did well and what they could improve
Improvement - make something better over time through practice, feedback or effort
Common misconception
Pupils who are more experienced may ignore the contribution of less able pupils, or even belittle or berate them when they don't contribute well to the team.
Encourage pupils to use their knowledge to offer feedback which can help bring about an improvement, emphasising that in team games, an individual cannot and should not perform all roles or carry the team.
Teacher tip
As in previous lessons, to limit cognitive load, the rules are being introduced incrementally and not always applied fully. If your pupils are experienced or ready to learn in greater depth then go ahead and include more specifics.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
