Pupils will already have in-depth understanding of how muscles work in antagonistic pairs across a joint to create movement via the leverage of bones. After they appreciate the three classes of lever and different planes/ axes our bodies can move in they will be in a strong position to develop their understanding of how different types of training impact positively on sporting performance. This unit links nicely with learning from maths and physics to form the foundations of biomechanical understanding.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils know the name and location of different joints in the human body (e.g. knee, ankle and elbow)
  • Pupils know that muscles work in antagonistic pairs across a joint to create movement via leverage of bones
  • Pupils know that muscles create movement by contracting and pulling one bone to articulate against another bone via connected tendons
  • Pupils understand that some movements and sports require greater force of contraction whereas others require prolonged moderate intensity contractions
