      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can pass over a range of distances.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: the ball is pushed with either one or two hands, with a follow through towards an intended target.
      2. Think: a bounce pass is most effective when a defender is between you and a teammate.
      3. Feel: quick decision making to use a fake pass builds confidence on the ball to make the right pass.
      4. Connect: communicating your direction of travel early supports the choice of pass by teammates.

      Keywords

      • Air pass - the ball travels between players without hitting the floor, such as a chest, javelin or overhead pass

      • Bounce pass - involves throwing the ball to the floor so it bounces to a teammate

      • Fake pass - a move to pretend to pass the ball to trick a defender into reacting

      Common misconception

Pupils think that for GCSE assessment, passing is only required in isolation to demonstrate the correct techniques.

Passing needs to be seen in progressive and conditioned practices to showcase the technique when faced with opposition and decision making.

      Teacher tip

Invite students to set up and lead their own passing drill. Request the drill is made game-like to reflect the decision making required.
