      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can pass over a range of distances with both feet.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: precision passes are made with the instep and follow through towards the intended target of the ball.
      2. Move: passes over longer distances have a bigger backswing and follow through and use a different part of the foot.
      3. Think: knowing when to perform a loft or drive pass for longer distances, will be determined by the position of others.
      4. Feel: quick decision making helps maintain possession and build confidence on the ball to make the right pass.
      5. Connect: communicating to the passer is key for them to read the direction and speed of the pass.

      Keywords

      • One two - a short pass to a team mate and then receive a quick pass back into space or directly back to them

      • Drive pass - striking with the ball with the laces or instep to pass over longer distances with speed and purpose

      • Long range pass - a pass made over longer distance, often to switch play or launch an attack, often a lofted pass.

      Common misconception

Pupils think that GCSE assessment for passing is just looking at the techniques in isolation.

Passing needs to be seen in progressive and conditioned practices to showcase the technique when faced with opposition and decision making.

      Teacher tip

Invite students to set up and lead their own passing drill. Request the drill is made game-like to reflect the decision making required.
