      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can shoot on target and respond with confidence to a ball being crossed from wide areas.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: using the laces and keeping the head over the ball to ensure shots are on target to the bottom or top corners.
      2. Move: loft and curl passes across the 6 yard box give time for attackers to peform a header or volley.
      3. Think: shots are best when on target at one of the four corners to force the goalkeeper to dive.
      4. Feel: when in range, have confidence to take a shot rather than hesitate or always look to offload the ball.
      5. Connect: playing with the same individuals regularly results in an increased awareness of what they are likely to do.

      Keywords

      • Cross - lofting the ball in from the wings for a teammate to shoot from

      • Shot on target - shot that enters the goal or would have if it wasn't blocked

      • Half-volley - kicking a ball immediately after it hits the ground

      Common misconception

Position of the non striking foot changes depending on where the shot is being aimed in the goal.

This is a common myth, however the positioning of the non striking foot remains consistent and needs to be at the side of the ball for optimal balance and accuracy so the shot is precise and on target.

      Teacher tip

Do not spend too long on shooting in isolation but use the first part of the lesson for pupils to demonstrate shooting technique.
