      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can accurately shoot at the goal with variety and power.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: using varied shots and angles creates unpredictability and increases the chances of scoring.
      2. Move: shooting on the move allows players to maintain momentum and evade defenders.
      3. Think: going into the ‘D’ is only permitted after the ball has been released.
      4. Feel: it takes confidence to jump or shoot while unstable, trusting your ability despite the lack of balance.
      5. Connect: having awareness of where the goalkeeper is improves the accuracy of scoring.

      Keywords

      • Jump shot - a player jumps into the air to throw the ball at the goal

      • Shooting angle - the various positions and directions from which a player can shoot at the goal to optimise their chance of scoring

      • Shot whilst falling - when a player shoots the ball while falling or after losing balance, typically to avoid a defender’s block

      Common misconception

Players are not allowed in the D apart from the goalkeeper.

If you land in the goal area (the D) after taking a shot, the goal will still count as long as the ball was released before you entered the area. However, if you enter the goal area during regular play, possession is awarded to the opposing team.

      Teacher tip

Other types of shooting can also be practiced using or adapting this Lesson Guide should your pupils require more practice at another type of shot. In the warm up, ensure the players do not run too close to the wall to catch the ball. Having a safety zone where they cannot enter could support this.

      Equipment

Handballs (1 between 2), 30+ cones, 8 tall cones or rounders bases (defenders), 8 x sets of 4 bibs, 8 goals (or chalk to draw goals)
