      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can communicate ideas and apply skills to a centre pass, backline throw in and penalty/free pass situation.

      Key learning points

      1. Move: playing netball requires stamina to continue to execute a pass with good ball placement within 3 seconds.
      2. Think: it is important to consider movements that help to create space for others, when attacking.
      3. Feel: remaining in your third will build confidence to control and manage the ball moving through the court.
      4. Connect: knowing my responsibility in dead ball situations is an important part of being in the team.

      Keywords

      • Centre pass - starts the game from the centre circle. The centre pass is then alternated between each team after a goal has been scored

      • Penalty pass - a penalty involving another player that is taken where the infringement occurred and the offending player stands out of play

      • Dead ball situation - when play is stopped for a throw in, centre pass or for free or penalty pass

      Common misconception

When a penalty pass is awarded, the player infringed has to take the pass.

Any player can take the penalty pass if it is in a third they are permitted to go into. Players need to communicate who this player can be in order to create an attacking advantage, as the player who made the infringement has to stand out of play.

      Teacher tip

These scenarios are useful to practice repeatedly so pupils are prepared for an assessment/moderation. They can not only showcase their skills, they can demonstrate an effective application of netball specific strategies and set plays.
