Why this why now

in Year 1 pupils learnt about the idea of Jesus as the son of God for Christians. In Year 3 they learnt about the events of Holy week deepened their concept of incarnation. In this unit they are ready to begin to analyse the teachings of Jesus that have consistently challenged Christians for centuries. They will build up important contextual knowledge that Jesus was a Jew in a Jewish world. They will also see how, for many Christians, these teachings have huge relevance in todays world.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils will know that for most Christians, Jesus was the son of God. This is known as incarnation.
  • Pupils will know that Jesus often taught in parables which are stories with a hidden meaning.
  • Pupils will know that Jesus was Jewish. He associated with people on the margins of society, such as lepers.
  • Pupils will know that different Christians will interpret the teachings of Jesus in different ways.
