Why this why now
Pupils will build on their understanding of the Prophet Muhammad from the previous unit to consider why Muslims might visit Jerusalem, Makkah or Karbala. They will apply the idea of harmony in Islam from Year 3 to examine the notion of pilgrimage as a state of harmony. In Year 3 pupils studied Christian Holy week and will apply this knowledge to understand why Jersualem is significant for many Christians. In Year 5 they will deepen their understanding of pilgrimage by investigating the concept in dharmic and other traditions and how it may be a similar or different experience for devotees.
Prior knowledge requirements
- Pupils should know about some aspects of the life of Prophet Muhammad, especially that Islam started in Makkah.
- They should have learnt about the life of Jesus and how Christians believe he was crucified and raised from the dead in Jerusalem.
- They will have thought about how some places are special for religious believers because of things that happened there.
- They should have explored Bar and Bat Mitzvah as part of a study of rites of passage.

Pilgrimage: why might some people visit Jerusalem, Karbala or Makkah?
Pupils will analyse why Jerusalem is a sacred place for many Jews, Christians and Muslims. From this they will explain what the experience of visiting sacred places might mean. Investigating case studies of Makkah and the Shi'a shrine of Karbala will deepen their sense of diversity in Islam.
