Why this why now

In Year 1 pupils learnt about naming ceremonies for a new baby. This social science unit revisits the idea of a rite of passage but at a deeper level. Pupils will see how Jewish ceremonies have been adapted for girls as well as boys and how Christians interpret the sacrament of baptism differently. A comparison with Hindus will allow pupils to see similarities and differences between Abrahamic and dharmic worldviews.

Prior knowledge requirements

  • Pupils will know that many people with religious or non-religious worldviews mark special events.
  • Pupils will know that some Christians baptise babies when they are born.
  • Pupils will know many Jews gather at a synagogue to worship God and be part of a community.
  • Pupils will know that Hindu dharma is a pluralist worldview.
