      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can explain how human voices are used in Islam.

      Key learning points

      1. The Qur’an is an oral text with rhythm and cadence.
      2. Some Muslims will try to learn to recite the whole Qur’an. There are competitions in Qur’an recitation.
      3. The call to prayer is often chanted in many mosques.
      4. We can better understand Muslim responses to recitation by talking to different Muslims.

      Keywords

      • Qur'an - Muslim holy book

      • Recite - say aloud from memory

      • Melody - rise and fall of the voice

      • Muezzin - a man who calls Muslims to prayer from the minaret of a mosque

      • Cadence - rhythm and quality of the voice

      Common misconception

There are no musical sounds in Islamic ritual.

Recitation of the Qur’an and the call to prayer have cadence, melody and rhythm.

      Teacher tip

Listen to versions of the call to prayer and discuss how the muezzin creates musical sounds. Watch and listen to Qu'ran recitation online - or invite someone from the Muslim community to the class to demontrate recitation. Pupils could try to learn and recite any short poem to see how this feels.
