Protecting food chains (Climate Change & Sustainability)
Lesson details
Learning outcome
I can describe different ways to protect plants and animals to prevent threats to food chains.
Key learning points
- A change to one living thing can affect other living things in the same food chain.
- Humans should be encouraged to behave in ways that help to protect plants and animals in their habitats.
- Information about protecting food chains can be researched using secondary sources of information.
Keywords
Habitat - The place where a plant or animal lives is called its habitat.
Threat - A threat is the possibility that something unwanted or dangerous will happen.
Impact - The impact of something is the effect it has.
Protect - To protect something is to keep it safe from harm.
Secondary sources - Secondary sources are texts, images or objects created using information gathered by others.
Common misconception
Some pupils may think that human actions can have an impact on animals and plants but that these actions do not affect food chains.
Explanation of different ways in which humans can protect plants and animals in their habitats.
Teacher tip
There are lots of websites that have great advice on how to make small changes to improve biodiversity in the local area as well as ways of helping to protect different habitats that are further afield.
Equipment
Access to secondary sources such as books about different habitats and the internet.

We use learning cycles to break down learning into key concepts or ideas linked to the learning outcome. Each learning cycle features explanations with checks for understanding and practice tasks with feedback. All of this is found in our slide decks, ready for you to download and edit. The practice tasks are also available as printable worksheets and some lessons have additional materials with extra material you might need for teaching the lesson.
The assessment exit quiz will test your pupils' understanding of the key learning points.
Our video is a tool for planning, showing how other teachers might teach the lesson, offering helpful tips, modelled explanations and inspiration for your own delivery in the classroom. Plus, you can set it as homework or revision for pupils and keep their learning on track by sharing an online pupil version of this lesson.
