Key learning points
- Any vowel with a written accent (a symbol) is stressed (pronounced more heavily and with greater emphasis).
- New vocabulary helps us talk about different subjects, like fundraising events.
- To say she, he, it with an -er verb, remove -er ending and add -e. To say you, remove -er ending and add -es.
- To change a statement into a question, you raise your voice at the end. This is called raised intonation.
- Spanish uses two question marks - a regular one at the end, like in English and an upside down one at the start.
Keywords
Stress - pronouncing a syllable more heaily than other syllables in a word
Accent - symbol added on top of vowels to indicate something about their pronunciation
Intonation - rise and fall of the voice in speaking
Common misconception
Vowels with accents don't make any difference in how we pronounce words.
In Spanish, we stress any vowel that has a written accent. These show us the syllable in a word that is pronounced with greater emphasis.
