Key learning points
- In Spanish, we stress any vowel that has a written accent.
- When there is no written accent, stress the penultimate syllable for any word ending in a vowel, [n] or [s].
- To say s/he, it with an -er verb, remove -er ending and add -e. To say 'we', remove -er ending and add -emos.
- To say what you or others don't do, put 'no' before the verb. This makes a negative. This works for any verb and person.
Keywords
Stress - pronouncing a syllable more heavily than other syllables in a word
Accent - symbol added on top of vowels to indicate something about their pronunciation
No - word used before a verb to make a negative
Common misconception
If a word doesn't have a written accent, it doesn't matter where you put the stress.
When there is no written accent, you need to stress the penultimate syllable for any word ending in a vowel, [n] or [s].
