It's my birthday! Singular 'hacer', negative ‘no’

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can say what I do or don't do, and what another person does or doesn't do on birthdays.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. In Spanish all words with antepenultimate (third-last) syllable stress have an accent, e.g. música.
      2. The verb 'hacer' means to do, to make. It is an irregular verb; I do is 'hago', she, he, it does is 'hace'.
      3. To make a sentence negative, add 'no' before the verb. This works with any verb and any person.

      Keywords

      • Hacer - irregular Spanish verb meaning to do, to make

      • Hago - I do, part of the Spanish verb 'hacer'

      • Hace - she, he, it does, part of the Spanish verb 'hacer'

      • No - word used before a verb to make a negative

      Common misconception

Like English, Spanish uses two different words to make verbs negative — just as English uses 'do not/don't' and 'does not/doesn't.'

In Spanish, simply use 'no' before the verb for all subjects (I, you, he, she, etc.) to make a negative, e.g. 'no hago' - I don't do, 'no hace' - she, he, it doesn't do.

      Teacher tip

To consolidate learning, ask pupils to write their own list of things they do and don’t do for their birthday, or for someone else’s party. Encourage them to use 'hago', 'hace', and 'no' in full sentences.
