Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. For making plurals, add -s to words ending in vowels, -es to consonants, and change -z to -c before adding -es.
      2. The singular persons of 'hacer' are 'hago', 'haces' and 'hace'. 'Hacer' has multiple meanings - to do, to make, to go.
      3. Singular persons of 'jugar' are 'juego', 'juegas', 'juega'. 'Jugar' is followed by al before a masculine singular noun.
      4. Use 'jugar' with a game or ball sport and 'hacer' for other activities or non-ball sports. They are not interchangeable.
      5. Use 'cuando' + 'es' + season or 'cuando' + 'hace' + weather to extend your sentences.

      Keywords

      • Hago - I do, part of the verb 'hacer' meaning to do and to make

      • Haces - You do, part of the verb 'hacer' meaning to do and to make

      • Hace - She, he, it does, part of the verb 'hacer' meaning to do and to make, also means it is when describing the weather

      • Juego - I play, part of the verb 'jugar' meaning to play, playing

      • Juegas - You play, part of the verb 'jugar' meaning to play, playing

      Common misconception

'Jugar' and 'hacer' are interchangeable as they often are in English - 'I play football', 'I do football'.

In Spanish, you can't use 'hacer' for all activities you do in your free time. If it is a ball sport or a game, use 'jugar'. If it is an activity, non-ball sport, task or something that you're making, use 'hacer'.

      Teacher tip

Pupils may like to find out additional sports or activities that they are interested in, using dictionaries or online reference resources. These can be used to organise lists of which sports use j'ugar a' or 'hacer' to further pupils' understanding.
