Describe family members: possessive adjective 'nuestro'

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use possessive adjectives ‘nuestro’ and ‘nuestra’ to describe what our and others' family members do.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. There is an accent on the final vowel of numbers 22, 23 and 26 because they have final-syllable stress and end in ‘s’.
      2. Many jobs end in -o when they refer to a man and -a when they refer to a woman, e.g. 'músico' and 'música' (musician).
      3. The indefinite article ('un', 'una') is not used when stating what job someone does, e.g. 'mi padre es médico'.
      4. To say the possessive adjective ‘our’ in Spanish, use 'nuestro'. 'Nuestro' needs to agree in gender with the noun.
      5. For singular masculine nouns use 'nuestro', for singular feminine nouns use 'nuestra'.

      Keywords

      • Possessive adjective - shows who something belongs to

      • Nuestro - our (masculine singular), possessive adjective

      • Nuestra - our (feminine singular), possessive adjective

      Common misconception

To say 'my mum is a teacher', it's 'mi madre es una profesora.'

In Spanish, we do not need the indefinite article ('un', 'una') when referring to jobs, so we would just say 'mi madre es profesora.'

      Teacher tip

This lesson covers numbers 21-30. Students love making up their own games to practise numbers. You could write a number between 1 and 30 on a whiteboard, hide it, and then let them guess which one it is in Spanish. They could then replicate this game in pairs.
