Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. 'More ... than' in Spanish is 'más' + adjective + 'que', e.g. 'Nadia está más feliz que Lucía'.
      2. 'Less ... than' is 'menos' + adjective + 'que', e.g. 'las tías están menos enojadas que Ana'.
      3. To say 'better than', use 'mejor que', e.g. 'la segunda canción es mejor que la primera'.
      4. To say 'worse than', use 'peor que', e.g. 'el vestido es peor que la camisa'.
      5. To show possession in Spanish, use possession + 'de' + owner, e.g. 'el amigo de Daniel' - 'Daniel's friend'.

      Keywords

      • Comparative - form of adjective or adverb used to compare people, things or ideas

      • Mejor que - comparative structure in Spanish meaning 'better than'

      • Peor que - comparative structure in Spanish meaning 'worse than'

      • De - Spanish preposition meaning 'from' and 'of', also used to express possession

      Common misconception

To say 'better than' in Spanish I can use 'más bueno que'. To say 'worse than' I can use 'menos malo que'.

In English we don't say 'more good than' or 'more bad than'. We say 'better than' or 'worse than'. Spanish also has words for 'better' and worse'. To say 'better than' use 'mejor que' and to say 'worse than' use 'peor que'.

      Teacher tip

This lesson is all about comparisons and students can usually really engage with this. You could use a visual hook and encourage them to compare two images, or they could get creative and write funny comparisons, e.g. comparing pets to family members.
