Sport and exercise: present continuous with -AR verbs

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use 2nd person singular and plural forms of the present continuous in the context of a PE lesson.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. A diphthong is a sound formed by the combination of two vowels in one syllable.
      2. To say you (sg) are doing something with an -ar verb, use 'estás' + a verb ending in -ando.
      3. To say you (pl) are doing something with an -ar verb, use 'estáis' + a verb ending in -ando.

      Keywords

      • Diphthong - sound formed by the combination of two vowels in one syllable

      • Present continuous - describes events happening right now, e.g. 'I am playing'

      Common misconception

Like in English, I can use the same form of the verb to adress 'you' for one person and 'you' for several people.

In Spanish, there are different verb endings to refer to 'you' (singular) and 'you' (plural). For -ar verbs these are -as and -áis.

      Teacher tip

You could show students a video of a 'pelota vasca' game to highlight the fast pace of the sport.
