Key learning points
- For regular -er and -ir verbs, the verb ending -imos refers to 'we' in the preterite tense.
- For regular -ar verbs, the verb ending -amos refers to 'we' in the preterite tense.
- The verb ‘huir’ has a stem change (i → y) in the present tense for 'I', you', 'he', 'she' and 'they'.
Keywords
Preterite - tense used for completed events in the past
1st person plural - form of pronouns and verbs used to refer to 'we'
Common misconception
'Huir' works in exactly the same way as all regular -ir verbs, e.g. escribir.
The verb 'huir' has a spelling change (i → y) in the present tense in the 1st person singular, 2nd person singular, 3rd person singular, and 3rd person plural forms: huyo, huyes, huye, huyen; this makes the vowel pronunciation easier - huyo not huio.
