Key learning points
- Spanish words with final syllable stress ending in -n or -s ('según', 'quizás') need an accent on the last syllable.
- The verb 'hacer' means 'to do' or 'to make'. We use the preterite tense to describe completed events in the past.
- The singular forms of 'hacer' in the preterite tense are 'hice' (I did), 'hiciste' (you did) and 'hizo' (she, he did).
- Spanish uses subject pronouns only for contrast or emphasis: 'yo' (I), 'tú' (you), 'él' (he) and 'ella' (she).
- 'De' often comes after location adverbs like 'cerca'. 'De' + 'el' becomes 'del' and 'de' + 'la' becomes 'de la'.
Keywords
Hacer - Spanish verb meaning 'to do' or 'to make'
Preterite - tense used for events completed in the past
Hice - 'I did, made', preterite tense of 'hacer', first person singular
Hiciste - 'you did, made', preterite tense of 'hacer', 2nd person singular
Hizo - 'he, she did, made', preterite tense of 'hacer', 3rd person singular
Common misconception
When 'de' appears before 'el' it becomes 'de el'.
When 'de' appears before a singular masculine noun with the definite article 'el' it merges with it to form 'del', e.g. 'la jugadora está fuera del estadio' - 'the player is outside the stadium'.
