Key learning points
- When strong vowels [a], [e] and [o] appear next to each other they are pronounced separately, in different syllables.
- The second person singular of 'estar' is ‘estás’ and the 2nd person plural is ‘estáis’.
- We use the present continuous to express an ongoing event. It is formed by using 'estar' + the present participle.
- To mean ‘them’ when referring to a plural feminine object, use the direct object pronoun 'las' before a verb.
- To mean ‘them’ for a plural masculine object, use the direct object pronoun 'los' before a verb.
Keywords
2nd person - form of pronouns and verbs used to refer to 'you' and 'you all'
Present participle - verb form that forms the present continuous, together with the auxiliary verb 'estar'
Direct object pronoun - replaces the noun receiving the action of the verb, e.g. 'me', 'you', 'it', 'them'
Common misconception
'Los' and 'las' always mean 'the'.
'Los' and 'las' mean 'the' in front of a plural noun but 'them' when they come before a verb.
