Key learning points
- When the 'doer' (subject) and 'receiver' (object) of an action are the same person we use a reflexive pronoun.
- To mean 'herself' or 'himself' in Spanish, use 'se' before a verb.
- Indirect object pronouns (e.g. 'him', 'them') indicate the person or thing that is indirectly affected by the verb.
- If the person affected by the action is 'me', use 'me'; if the person affected by the action is 'you', use 'te'.
- To refer to one person or thing indirectly affected by an action use 'le', for more than one person or thing use 'les'.
Keywords
Se - reflexive pronoun 'himself', 'herself' or 'itself'
Reflexive pronoun - used to indicate doing something to yourself, words like 'myself' and 'yourself'
Indirect object pronoun (IOP) - replaces the person, people or thing(s) that the verb action is done to, when the action is to me, for you, to them
Common misconception
The indirect object pronoun 'le' changes to 'la' to match the gender of the person receiving the action.
'Le' means 'to him', 'to her' or 'to it' regardless of the person receiving the action, e.g. 'le doy un regalo a Lucía' or 'le doy un regalo a Daniel'.
