Key learning points

  1. In Spanish, we use the verb 'ser' to talk about traits, including jobs.
  2. To say 'you are', use 'eres', and to say 'you all are', use 'sois'.
  3. The -ity at the end of an English word is often -idad in Spanish, e.g. 'tranquility' - 'tranquilidad'.
  4. To refer to 'you' for one person with a present tense -ar verb, use the verb ending -as, e.g. 'buscas'.
  5. To refer to 'you' for two or more people with a present tense -ar verb, use the verb ending -áis, e.g. 'buscáis'.

Keywords

  • Eres - part of the verb 'ser' meaning 'you are'

  • Sois - part of the verb 'ser' meaning 'you (all) are'

  • Simple present - describes habitual events in the present: 'I do'

Common misconception

In Spanish the ending for 'you singular' and 'you plural' for -ar verbs is the same.

To refer to 'you' for one person with a present tense -ar verb, use the verb ending -as, e.g. 'buscas'; to refer to 'you' for two or more people with a present tense -ar verb, use the verb ending -áis, e.g. 'buscáis'.
