Key learning points
- If the stress is on the final syllable and the word ends in any consonant except ‘n’ or ‘s’, there is no accent.
- If the stress is on the final syllable and the word ends in a vowel or ‘n’ or ‘s’, there is an accent.
- To talk about where someone goes (present tense), use the verb ‘ir’, e.g. 'vais'.
- To talk about what you are going to do (future plans), use a present tense form of the verb 'ir' + a + infinitive.
- In Spanish we use the simple present to talk about scheduled plans in the future, e.g. 'organizáis una fiesta mañana'.
Keywords
Final syllable stress - pronouncing the last syllable more heavily than other syllables in a word
'ir' + a + infinitive - 2-verb structure meaning 'going to' + infinitive
Simple present - tense used to describe habitual events, routine actions and in some cases scheduled future events
Common misconception
A present tense verb can be used on its own to talk about the future.
When using the present tense to talk about the future, it is essential to include a temporal adverb (such as 'mañana', 'la próxima semana', 'el lunes', etc.) to make the future meaning clear.
