Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. If the stress is on the final syllable and the word ends in any consonant except ‘n’ or ‘s’, there is no accent.
      2. If the stress is on the final syllable and the word ends in a vowel or ‘n’ or ‘s’, there is an accent.
      3. To talk about where someone goes (present tense), use the verb ‘ir’, e.g. 'vais'.
      4. To talk about what you are going to do (future plans), use a present tense form of the verb 'ir' + a + infinitive.
      5. In Spanish we use the simple present to talk about scheduled plans in the future, e.g. 'organizáis una fiesta mañana'.

      Keywords

      • Final syllable stress - pronouncing the last syllable more heavily than other syllables in a word

      • 'ir' + a + infinitive - 2-verb structure meaning 'going to' + infinitive

      • Simple present - tense used to describe habitual events, routine actions and in some cases scheduled future events

      Common misconception

A present tense verb can be used on its own to talk about the future.

When using the present tense to talk about the future, it is essential to include a temporal adverb (such as 'mañana', 'la próxima semana', 'el lunes', etc.) to make the future meaning clear.
