Consejos de vida: read aloud, reading practice (Edexcel)

      Lesson details

      Learning outcome

I can use my vocabulary knowledge and reading strategies to successfully complete exam-style reading tasks in the context of healthy lifestyles and life advice.

Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

      Key learning points

      1. Using a checklist before a read-aloud task is a powerful and effective strategy.
      2. In a read-aloud task, think carefully about how to correctly pronounce the letters in each word and spot tricky sounds.
      3. Considering cognates and mentally rehearsing the text are key steps in preparation for a read-aloud task.
      4. We can avoid distractors by not rushing to select an answer.
      5. Distractors can appear anywhere - in the question, the answer options or the text itself.

      Keywords

      • Distractor - incorrect but plausible answer option in reading and listening tasks, designed to test your attention to detail

      Common misconception

I can use my knowledge of sound-symbol correspondences (SSCs) to successfully complete a read-aloud task.

Simply re-reading without purpose doesn't necessarily lead to better comprehension. Strategies such as reading through the text and questions, using each question to find the relevant part of the text, avoiding distractors, etc., are more effective.

      Teacher tip

Encourage students to identify gaps in their vocabulary knowledge using words from this revision lesson. All vocabulary comes from the GCSE word list and has been previously taught, making this a good check of retention and areas needing more practice.

      Equipment

For learning cycle 3, it would be helpful for pupils to have a copy of the questions, or better still, the texts and the questions.
