Vocabulary and transcripts for this lessons

Key learning points

  1. Identifying and avoiding distractors is key to ensuring we don't jump to the wrong conclusions during reading tasks.
  2. Active reading strategies support reading comprehension and accuracy in responses.

Keywords

  • Distractor - incorrect but plausible answer option in reading tasks, designed to test your attention to detail

  • Active reading - engaging fully with the text in a focused effort to understand and find relevant information

Common misconception

Reading and re-reading a text is always an effective way to read for understanding and get the right answers to comprehension questions.

Simply reading and re-reading a text isn't always the most effective way to read for understanding. Using active reading strategies such as reading the title and reading and annotating the questions can boost comprehension and accuracy in responses.

Teacher tip

There are two versions of task A2. Option 1 has Higher-tier vocabulary. Option 2 is for Foundation tier. The teacher uses Option 1 in both cases in the video. Option 2 slides and worksheet are available as required.
